Physical and Chemical Properties(S)-3-hydroxy-γ-butyrolactone is a colorless liquid, soluble in water, alcohols and other organic solvents, insoluble in petroleum ether, etc. It is a very important organic synthesis intermediate and also a very important chiral source (Chiral Pool). It is mainly used as an intermediate for regulating (R)-γ-hydroxy-β-quinolinic acid [(R)-GABOB]. (R)-GABOB is used to treat high blood lipids; (S)-Oxiracetam is a promoter of brain metabolism, and its synthesis is also derived from it; when reduced, (s)-3-hydroxy-4-aminobutyric acid can be obtained, the latter is an important intermediate for anti-AIDS drugs; the synthesized (s)-3-hydroxy-4-aminobutyric acid is a potential anticonvulsant; converting it into (s)-5-aminomethyl-1,3-oxazole-2-thione can obtain the latest - generation antibacterial drugs; in addition, (s)-N-methyl-3-hydroxyproline and (R)-N-methyl-3-methylproline also have important physiological activities, and can be obtained by simple conversion from (s)-3-hydroxy-γ-butyrolactone. Many natural products can also be synthesized from (s)-3-hydroxy-γ-butyrolactone.
